ChanceCold air caught inside  
the wishful shape of lungs,  gently constricted  like a lie told to soothe.  I'd like to touch someone.  To touch without taking,  without leaving that mark—  indelibly delicate,  
that promise to someday  leave them more alone.   
It's like slipping sideways  through a crowd, a million  moments, a million mouths  pink and orange in the summer  rain, mingling fingersweat.  Nobody belongs to me,  and the crowd least of all—  the crowd has always  belonged to itself.

slick segments  
silked with a razored slither.  Such a man deserves  
only one thing.  You're an engine  
hissing huckleberry smoke,  sneaking snarls rolled like cigarillos,  cracked glass and elastic slap-spandex skin.  You've been closeted with curiosity,  
brushed with the bronze of a false phoenix  
ignited by the hot night's

of the fog pulled across your body  like a curtain—closed, open, alive.   
Leave room for light; I have seen  everything, touched the shape of the dark,  each sweet scar.

as you feel—  yes; I know too well those words,  like nestless fledglings, glacier's fallen fruit.  But winter's succumption is almost arrived.  Try not to hope too hard.

WarI remember understanding,  
the explosion of peace as they fell  
once and again  
in an orchestration of carnage.    I can tell tales  
of when that fever fades,  
when the burning deathdust  
rides out of the lungs,  
when the soldiers stir  
and realize that their puzzle-piece hearts  
can't fit anymore into their mothballed lives.    I myself understand all too well,  
lasting as flotsam on an empty sea,  
wishing a return to the sincere destruction  
that marks a simple life. War
